2017 Award Winners
Congratulations to the following students:
Citizenship Cup: Awarded to a person in Year 8 who has been an excellent 'citizen' at Whangarei Heads School. This student goes out of their way to do things for the school, are community minded and are an excellent and positive role model. Winner: Eloise Mitchell
Ambassador's Trophy: Awarded to a Year 7 or 8 student who has represented the school well at an event, or events, outside of school. This person has shown maturity and capability. Winner: Star Rose
Sportsmanship Award: Awarded to the student who has consistently demonstrated that win or lose, Sportsmansip, in its very essence, is respect - respect for others and one's self. Sportsmanship encompasses all that which is good in human nature. Winner: Elliott Croasdale
Enviro Award: Awarded to the person who has shown initiative, care and responsibility for the environment. Winner: Cole Anderson
Super Nova Award: Awarded to a senior student who has shown 'rising star' qualities. The recipient has shown fairness, resilience, and a strong collaborative approach to all learning. Winner: Tai Martin
Mana Trophy: Awarded to a senior student who has been a cultural leader in the school; someone who has earned mana from the school and his/her peers. Winners: Maya Porter and Seabren Struijcken
Music Trophy: Awarded to a senior student (Years 6-8) who has demonstrated leadership in music. Winner: Seabren Struijcken
Excellence Certificates: To acknowledge students who have excelled in their special talent.
Surfing: Placed second in the National Scholastic Surfing Championships: Cooper Ashill
Football: Train with the 12th Grade Talent Centre squad for Whangarei and were selected at the age of ten for the Under 12 Girls team, representing Northland in the Weir Rose Tournament in Cambridge. Faith Allen and Bethany Maltby.
Pony Club Recently qualified to represent Whangarei as a member of the Whangarei Pony Club show jumping team and will be competing in the New Zealand Pony Club Championships in February. Elsa Buckley
Hopes and Dreams Exhange
We are offering a 10 minute time slot for you and your child to come on and meet with the teacher and talk about your hopes and dreams for them for the 2018 school year.
Meetings will be held:
- 3.10pm - 7.00pm Wednesday 31st January
- 2.10pm - 7.00pm Thursday 8th February
From now the booking site will be open to book your interviews. Go to www.schoolinterviews.co.nz/code in your browser, and enter the event code 629hf then follow three simple steps.
- Enter name, student's name and email address.
- Pick the teachers you want to meet
- You will see a timetable showing when your chosen teachers are available. Simply click on the times that suit you.
When you have finished, your interview timetable will be emailed to you. If you need to change or cancel your interviews, you can enter the event code 629hf again.
If you don't have internet access, please call the school office on (09 434 0844). The final day to make bookings will be 3pm on 30th January 2018.

Adopt a Plot
Room 1 have committed themselves to adopting a plot on Limestone Island. This will be weeded and planted but the long term expectation is that all our children become involved and get the chance to develop this area. We also hope that families visit Limestone Island and become involved in the care and maintenance of our plot. Limestone Island is very important to Whangarei Heads as it is the nursery for the Kiwis that are eventually released at the Heads.
Rooms 1 and 2 are also involved in tree planting at Urquharts Bay, along the stream that our school has a long term commitment to clean up and develop. They are planting a range of natives including flax, manuka, kanuka and pohutakawa along the stream under the guidance of Adam Willetts the Bream Head Ranger.
We have also been fortunate in receiving funding for a trapping project in and around school. The funds will be spent on rat and stoat trapping, pest tracking and weta hotels.
KUA TAE - OUR SCHOOL SONG
Our School Song, Kua Tae was written by Laurence Berry, and Cathy and Danny Tuato'o and the Youtube clip was made by Billie Berry before she left our school for High School.
